Meet the Designer: Rayman Boozer of Apartment 48

What started as an obsession with shelter magazines during his upbringing in Indiana, later nourished by an education in the field, Rayman Boozer’s undeniable passion for interior design began at an early age and allowed him to plant the seeds of his original concept store.

When the doors of Apartment 48 first opened, Boozer had hoped it would allow visitors to peek inside his colourful vision and purchase an item or two without much concern. After the boutique was famed by the press, the interior cognoscenti quickly clutched to its exuberant aesthetic and Boozer unearthed an urge to push the boundaries even further. Apartment 48 then blossomed into the fully entrenched design firm it is today.

“When it comes to shaking up an existing space, I always remind clients that colour is the least expensive update you can make to completely change a room.”

Previously deemed “The Colour Guru,” Boozer’s eye for punching patterns and colossal colour proves to be nothing shy of impactful and we’re proud to have worked alongside him on so many of his projects over the years. Join us as we step behind the scenes to learn more about his work and his creative vision.

How would you define your interior design style?

I love combining vibrant colors, exotic materials, and contemporary furnishings to create spaces that feel optimistic, relaxed and effortless. Definitely a bohemian vibe!

Rayman Boozer

“Colour palette sets a tone for a room, and particularly in your home, it sheds light on your personality. You can walk into a new space and instantly learn something about the inhabitants without speaking a word.”

Where do you find your design inspiration?

My personal passions include travel and fashion. Often in my design, I utilize layers of color and pattern that reflect my favourite brands and locales.

What was your first memorable design project?

A beach house on Fisher’s Island. The size of the space and the seclusion of the island enhanced the experience of one of my first major projects.

Do you have a space or a concept you’ve always dreamed of working on?

As a travel enthusiast, I’ve always wanted to design hotels.

What does the beginning stage of a new project look like for you?

I always start projects by sketching and coloring: sometimes an entire floor plan, other times I focus on a unique feature of the project like built-ins, a special rug, or an atrium courtyard. Whatever I’m most excited about!

What’s one piece of advice you’d offer someone starting their design career?

Find your point of view and have the confidence to show it to the world. You can’t stand out without it.

What is your design Mantra?

Always optimistic, always upbeat.

What are your 5 favourite Rug Company rugs?

Carnival (Paul Smith); Modern Swirl (Paul Smith); Framis (Mary Katrantzou); Zap (Fiona Curran); Hummingbird (Alexander McQueen)

Bright colours and bold patterns are often reflected in your work. Have you always been confident creating a statement interior?

Yes I love a statement! It did take time to become confident with color and to learn which combinations best suited each project. I always start with a design story that I use to justify which colors and pattern to layer. And often, that design story centres around a fabulous rug.

Craftsmanship and collaboration are at the forefront of what we do at The Rug Company. How do these elements play into your work as a designer?

I always say to clients: buy the best you can afford at the moment. Quality is very important to me. When you buy the best you only cry once.
